The latest Department of Home Affairs data gives us a valuable insight into Australia's National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) program.

Between April and June 2026:

🔹2,166 Expressions of Interest (EOIs) were received

🔹248 invitations were issued

🔹Invitation rounds are being conducted monthly

But the numbers tell an even more important story.

Australia's invitations were heavily concentrated in its highest-priority Tier One sectors:

💻 Critical Technologies — 122 invitations

⚕️ Health Industries — 45 invitations

🌿 Renewables & Low Emission Technologies — 33 invitations

Other sectors receiving invitations included Financial Services and FinTech, Agri-food and AgTech, Defence and Space, Education, Sports and the Arts, Infrastructure and Transport, and Resources. Of the 248 invitations issued, 192 went to Priority 3 candidates in Tier One sectors.

The National Innovation Visa is designed for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement.

Submitting an EOI does not guarantee an invitation, and receiving an invitation does not mean Home Affairs has already determined that the applicant satisfies the visa requirements.

The latest figures nevertheless provide an important indication of where Australia's National Innovation Visa program is currently concentrating its invitations.

If you are an accomplished researcher, entrepreneur, innovative investor, athlete, creative professional or other exceptionally talented individual considering Australia, your sector, achievements and evidence need to be carefully assessed before pursuing this highly competitive pathway.
